A route planning and scheduling application will improve operational efficiency by planning routes in much less time than a human can, and will find routes that are less expensive to operate, as well.

But there are other inexpensive tools available can make the route planner’s job even easier. Let’s take a look at one of them: the high resolution panel.

The high resolution panel provides more space for useful information on a slightly larger screen.

Today, many users have an HD resolution panel, 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall. Typical screen sizes range from 23 inches (diagonal) to 27 inches.

Also available are QHD resolution panels, 2560 pixels wide and 1440 pixels tall. A typical size is 32 inches (diagonal).

So why would you want a larger panel on your desk?

If your job is all about spreadsheets, word processing or using an application to fill out forms, an HD panel will probably work fine. But if you have an application where you need to see a large amount of data and need to use a drag and drop interface to move work around, the QHD panel may be a better fit for the job.

Take a look at the two screenshots above. In the top (HD) panel, you can see only part of the third trip. In the lower (QHD) panel, you can see all of the third trip and part of the fourth one. You also have more of the screen available for the map, the visual indication that the routes are designed in an intelligent manner.

Overall, the QHD panel shows over 77% more data than an HD panel.

Nice, but at what cost? Quality QHD panels are available from online stores for less than $300. Or to put it in a different perspective, less than the cost of a phone or handheld carried by one of the drivers whose route is being planned.

What about space? The difference between a 26 inch (diagonal) panel and 32 inch panel is about five inches of width on the desktop.

When investing in applications to plan routes for either service technicians or product delivery, another small investment in better computer hardware can improve route planning efficiency even more.
